Republic Poly has its official opening yesterday, which I didnt even bother to attend. Most of my classmates went but I think they their main cause was to attack the buffet dinner. Anyway I did see my the reports of my school on newspaper and I just read through the speech that PM made.
"REPUBLIC POLYTECHNIC – CHARTING A NEW PATH
As our newest polytechnic, RP has continued the tradition of applied learning and innovation. At the same time, RP has positioned itself not just as a fifth polytechnic but an institution that will produce something different from the others. You have established your own institutional character, made unique contributions and charted new paths in our polytechnic space.
RP‟s pervasive use of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach is a first in the polytechnics and in Singapore. Everyday, students work in teams to look at problems from multiple perspectives. The students also hone their communication and presentation skills as they present, debate and defend their 4 findings. They learn from one another, while developing important life skills. Having to look for resources on your own, grapple with problems with no clear-cut answers, and work with people with different strengths and personalities daily is good preparation for working life. Hence, it is no surprise that RP‟s approach to learning has received positive feedback from many stakeholders.
Republic Polytechnic is also carving out its own niches and areas of expertise. For example, its School of Applied Science has come up with innovative ways to make foods functional. Nutrient-enriched chocolates and ice-creams are just some of the products that the school has invented. I understand these new-age foods have caught the eyes of local companies, and a few MOUs have already been signed. To cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit, RP has set up a retail shop which students run and manage on their own. It is a good way for them to learn what it takes to measure up to a demanding business environment.
Finally, I am glad that RP is carrying out community outreach projects in Woodlands in its efforts to integrate into the community. Instead of gates and fences, the open layout of the campus invites the Woodlands community onto its grounds. You have opened up the facilities in your "campus in a park" for the public to use and enjoy. In particular, the Republic Polytechnic Cultural Centre will liven up the arts and culture scene, and be a focal point for such activities. The centre is focussing on Ethnic Arts to celebrate Singapore‟s cultural roots, and to bring the arts into the heartlands. Through this and other initiatives, the staff and students of RP can participate as active members of the community. "
If any of you have been wondering how is this new poly like, well just read whatever that's above, you'll get a clearer picture. I really love this school of mine, but more than just the new and cool facilities I get to use, it's the people that I meet added colours to my life =)
